Sally's Stories - Lesson in Healing from DRHR: Trauma Life Essential Oil and Use in Animals

By Sally Shultis, owner of Deserts Rose Healing Ranch

The other day my 15 year old Doberman, Brigette, became extremely agitated. She began pacing and panting heavily. Her heart was pounding and she would not let me out of her sight. Because of her advanced age, I became very concerned and started acting quickly to resolve the problem. Of course I assumed that I knew the source of the problem. She had been outside in 90 degree heat and had become overheated, or so I thought. First, I treated her with Peppermint oil as this can bring ones body temperature down within a few minutes. I also put one drop of RutaVala on each front paw to calm her down. She began to salivate and lick her lips, which are normal reactions when an animal “needs” the oil. If they don’t “need” the oil they will just turn their head away and ignore it. The Peppermint and Ruta Vala, however, did not relieve her symptoms. The problem continued to escalate to
the point where I thought she might have a heart attack. I then gave her Valerian because it acts as a sedative / tranquilizer to the nervous system. No Luck!! I was getting frustrated and worried at this point.

Sometimes you have to take a step back and begin again. This is what I began to do. Why weren’t the oils working? I was thinking this was a physical problem and was treating it as such with no results. Then it dawned on me. Many problems are caused by emotions. We often neglect this fact, especially in our animals. Our animals feel emotional pain, neglect, sadness, fear, anger, jealousy, etc., just the way we do. If you address the emotional aspect of your pet’s imbalanced condition, often you will be focusing on the problem at its source and see relief of physical symptoms by using emotional oils.

I began to apply different oils. I started with what I consider the BIG BANG of emotional oils, Trauma Life. According to the Essential Oils Desk Reference, “Trauma Life is said to release buried emotional trauma (i.e., accidents, death of loved ones, assault, and abuse). It combats stress and uproots traumas that cause insomnia, anger, restlessness, and a weakened immune response.” I let Brigette sniff
the Trauma Life oil and put one drop on each of her front paws. Within thirty seconds, all of her symptoms were gone. She lay down in her bed exhausted from the experience. Because of her innate, attentive nature, she refused to relax and go to sleep. In order to let her sleep I used one drop of Surrender Oil on the spot where her spine meets the base of her skull. I did this because Surrender “Helps one surrender aggression and a controlling attitude.” After the oil was applied, Brigette put her head down and went to sleep. Surrender oil is, in fact, “essential” for anyone with a dog who has an aggressive or controlling nature. Types of dogs that typically come to mind in this category are bully breeds,
Rotwiellers, and Dobermans.

When treating our animals for symptoms they are experiencing it is important to consider the complex interaction of both physical and emotional sources of imbalance within our pets. We naturally
gravitate towards treating the physical symptoms but sometimes the emotional state of the animal is what needs to be examined. The emotional oils I keep handy are Trauma Life, Surrender, Peace and
Calming(“promotes relaxation and a deep sense of peace and wellbeing, helping to dampen tensions and uplift spirits”), and Joy (“it helps overcome deep-seated grief and depression”). Don’t be hesitant to use the emotional oils on your animals as well as yourself. They can have amazing results, sometimes at unexpected times, as was the case with Brigette.
